The Rules

The Official Certified Rules of The Championship of The World.

Note: this is a work in progress. Some rules may be commonly understood but not yet listed.

Universal Rules

  • Play at your own risk.
  • Whoever wins the last sanctioned game of the event takes home the trophy.
  • Local field rules apply as applicable.
  • League rules apply as applicable.
  • MLB rules apply as applicable.
  • The field and league rules will be clearly stated and agreed upon before the game.

Championship League Rules

  • The Head Groundskeeper shall have final say on all rulings.
  • The game shall be 7 innings.
  • There shall be two outs per half inning, unless there are three or one.
  • The batting order always stays the same.
  • Batters stay at the plate until they make an out.
  • Teams must change pitchers every inning, in the same order as the batting order. The pitcher must complete the inning without relief. After the fifth inning, the bullpen is available and pitchers may be changed without restriction as long as they are in the batting lineup of the team in question.
  • A ball fielded cleanly (does not touch the ground after a player touches it) before the doubles line is an out.
  • A ball which comes to rest in fair territory is at least a single.
  • A ball which clears the doubles line on the ground is a single.
  • A ball which clears the doubles line in the air is a double.
  • A ball which clears the home run line on the ground is a triple.
  • A ball which clears the home run line in the air is a home run.
  • A ball which clears the home run line in the air may be caught for an out.
  • First and third may be marked for the purpose of judging fair vs foul balls.
  • Foul territory normally extends six to ten feet in front of the batters box.
  • A double play may be made on a ground ball by throwing a strike in an uninterrupted continuous motion after fielding the ball.
  • On hits, runners advance the same number of bases as the hit.
  • On outs, runners do not advance.
  • The strike zone shall be agreed upon before the game, and may only be adjusted with majority consent between games.
  • Players who are too young to be eligible may take swings or throw pitches between innings.
  • Pitchers may NOT throw warm up pitches at the beginning of an inning.
  • When playing three side games, no batter should face the same pitcher twice in a row.
  • When playing with an odd number of players, the players on the odd team will take turns sitting out when their team is on the field.
  • Left handers must be balanced between teams.
  • Players may be given a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct, including but not limited to leaning into pitches that would be strikes. Two yellow cards constitute a red card and ejection from the game. It is customary, but not required, to give a warning before a yellow card.
  • In the event of a dispute between two teams that cannot be resolved, the possession arrow will determine the outcome of the dispute, at which time the possession arrow will change directions. At the start of the game the possession arrow points in the direction of the home team.
  • Teams will be chosen by spinning the bat. Players selected by the bat will be on the same team, and the bat will be spun until the teams are even.
  • Extra innings are optional in exhibition games (non-sanctioned events).
  • A pitch which hits the batter is a ball, unless the batter swings at the pitch.
  • The mercy rule applies whenever the losing team decides to give up.
  • No gloves allowed in the field.
  • The Head Groundskeeper always plays for the home team.

Limited Time Rules

  • All Championship League rules apply as applicable.
  • For a 45 minute long game, no new inning will begin after 35 minutes of play.
  • For a 45 minute long game, no new at-bat will begin after 45 minutes of play.
  • New players may join in mid-game, and will be placed at the end of the batting order.
  • Limited Time games cannot be Sanctioned Events.
  • In a 45 minute long game, the bullpen is open after the third inning and pitchers may be changed without restriction as long as they are in the batting lineup of the team in question.
