Not To Be Continued: 4-4

Nathan, Peter and Dow tied Angus and Alex, 4-4, in a down-to-the-wire game at The Lot.

A great game, this one had us on the edge of our seats.

The first inning was scoreless, with Angus and Nathan pitching solid innings for both sides. The second heated up a bit, with a disputed line call on a ground out in the top of the inning. Angus made a great play on a Dow grounder in left, but Peter begged to differ, and turned the Possession Arrow towards the visitors.

In the bottom of the second, Angus got it started with a walk, and Alex followed with four straight walks to make the score 2-0. Peter's curveball is getting more effective every week and the front office has big expectations in '07.

In the top of the third, Angus had a few control issues and let two runners on. He then had a chance on a slow roller back to the mound but bobbled it to give Peter the dirty single and load the bases. After regaining his composure he was able to get another slow roller and throw the strike for the double play to end the inning. In the bottom of the inning Dow was in control, catching both batters looking at his submarine curve for strike three.

So, Alex needed two outs for the win. He went right after Dow and struck him out. One out to go. He got two quick strikes on Nathan and the crowd was on their feet. He then experienced the classic "ahead 0-2 and get cocky" wiffle pitcher syndrome, and let Nathan get away with a walk. Nathan singled on the next pitch to put the tying run on first. Then, after getting behind another 0-2 count, Nathan hit back-to-back pitches over the wall to put his team ahead 4-2.

It looked like trouble for the home team, but Alex was able to bear down and get a popup to end the inning. Down two runs going into the bottom of the fourth, Angus displayed seldom seen patience to walk two runners on. He then cranked a triple to left to score two and tie the game, with the winning run on third. The crowd went wild - they had seen that the blast was within 2 feet of a game winning home run and they knew there was more to come.

Any dirty single, opposite field dribbler, or shot down the line would win it. Any bobble would bring that runner in. Any bloop hit to right.

But not today.

Nathan got a handle on his fastball and was able to get Angus and then Alex to end the game. Final, 4-4. Great game.

This game manifested how much we've grown as wif players - full use of the posession arrow, QP ( quick pitch ) and the bean ball. I'm proud to be a member of the pike league 2006.
