Getting Out Of A Jam: 5-4-0

Clem turned the tables in the last play of the game to hold onto victory over Gus and Benny at Briarhill, 5-4-0.

Benny was the early story in this game. He got called up to his first Championship League exhibition game at Briarhill and performed well in his inaugural appearance, hitting singles and doubles to put runners in scoring position every inning, laying off bad pitches, and keeping his fastball down. We look forward to much more from this heralded Championship League prospect, who was selected by Rockingham with the 8th pick in the 10th round of the 2001 draft.

After Benny was forced to leave the game with a sore attention span in the bottom of the second inning, it looked like Clem was going to cruise to victory. He entered the bottom of the fourth with a neat 5-2 lead padded with three early dingers. Then things started to get shaky as he threw 7 straight balls and then let up a long double. Gus then walked to load the bases, and hit a shot back to Clem that was too hot to handle. 5-3.

After another walk on four straight pitches the score was 5-4 and the merry-go-round was running full speed. The air was thick; Clem was sweating; we'd seen this kind of meltdown before. Two more balls to make the count 2-0.

Grounder back to the mound ... he picks it up ... going for the double play ... HE GETS IT. TWO OUTS TO END THE INNING AND GET OUT OF THE JAM!

Final: 5-4-0, with a finish to remember.
